Methanex Egypt Wins the Award for the Highly Commended Project Within the “Best Safety Project of the Year” Category in EGYPS 2023

Methanex Egypt won the award for the highly commended project within the “Best Safety Project of the Year” category at EGYPS Global Sustainability in Energy Awards Ceremony in recognition of its efforts in leading the development of a Process Safety Management (PSM) framework for the Egyptian oil and gas sector in partnership with the sector’s holding companies in alignment with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resource’s vision for the modernization of the industry.

EGYPS “Best Safety Project of the Year” award category recognizes the key safety projects within the oil، gas، and wider energy industry globally that has been completed in 2020-2022. Methanex was selected as a finalist for this award last November by EGYPS Sustainability in Energy Awards jury members.

This journey to embed PSM within the oil، gas and petrochemical industries in Egypt started in 2018 with Methanex Egypt launching an annual PSM conference in cooperation with ECHEM، followed by the signing of a PSM Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources in 2020 to create a PSM road map and an Egyptian PSM steering committee to drive the PSM agenda in the sector. This successful partnership has resulted in the development of 24 high quality PSM standards and guidelines، for sector companies to follow and implement within their processes for safer operations across the industry.

It is worth noting that Methanex the publishing of the book “Towards Safer Processes in the Oil، Gas، and Petrochemical Industries – An Overview of Egyptian PSM Standards and Guidelines” – documenting the unique journey of collaboration between members of the Egyptian Process Safety Steering Committee، leading to the development of a full Process Safety Management framework for the Egyptian Oil، Gas and Petrochemicals sector. The book summarizes the 24 PSM standards and guidelines developed by the Egyptian Process Safety Steering Committee’s Technical Sub-Committee and approved and issued by the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) and that will enable sector companies to design، build and operate safe facilities based on global industry best practices. Promoting Process Safety Management

The Egyptian PSM Steering Committee has been created as a result of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and Methanex Egypt in February 2020 to promote Process Safety Management within the Egyptian Oil and Gas Sector. The MoU mandated the creation of an Egyptian PSM Steering Committee to drive the robust agenda and roadmap aimed at institutionalizing PSM within the oil and gas industry in accordance with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources’ modernization program and international best practices، guidelines and standards. The Committee oversees the implementation of the MoU and the process safety management roadmap. The steering committee includes representatives from the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC)، ECHEM، Methanex Egypt، the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) and South Valley Egyptian Petroleum Holding Company (Ganope).
