The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism participated in the XXII Conference on Egyptology and Papyrology، promoted by the Italian Institute for Egyptian Civilization and organized jointly with the “Corrado Basile” Papyrus Museum، will be held in person in Syracuse from 28 September to 1 October 2023، and attended by Professor Moamen Othman as a member of the conference's scientific committee، who expressed his happiness with this selection as a representative of the Ministry in this important international conference.

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism is pleased to confirm that the XXII Conference on Egyptology and Papyrology، which is held annually on a regular basis، discuss the latest studies and scientific research in Egyptology and papyri studies، in a way that works to exchange experiences between participants from different countries of the world، to enriching the field of scientific research in the field of antiquities and museums، especially in Egypt.

Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities’ participation thanks to a research paper
Professor Moamen Othman stated that the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities’ participation in this year’s conference، the XXII Conference on Egyptology and Papyrology، came through its presentation of a research paper on "the study of previous restoration treatments of the Old Kingdom archives through the Gebelein Papyrus distributed between the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and the Turin Museum".
He affirms that this research paper in the XXII Conference on Egyptology and Papyrology، sheds light on the historical aspect of the papyrus، the place of its discovery، and the treatments that have been carried out since its discovery، as well as to evaluate these treatments، and to study the necessary treatments that were carried out in terms of cleaning and re-preserving it، as it dealt with the evaluation of the previous restoration work on the papyrus that was carried out in Italy after its transfer and restoration in the Turin Museum during the thirties of the last century، then، it was returned to Egypt by the archaeologist Ahmed Fakhry in 1950.
Gebelein papyri are among the oldest papyri collections
The XXII Conference on Egyptology and Papyrology presented the two mountains or Gebelein papyri which are among the oldest collections of administrative papyri dating back to the Old Kingdom and Egyptologist Posener-Kriéger dates them back to the Fourth Dynasty in the first half of the third millennium BC. as well as they are among the few papyri that have survived from this period.
The mission of the Egyptian Museum in Turin found the two mountains or Gebelein papyri in 1936 inside a wooden box in an unknown cemetery، they were wrapped in five almost complete scrolls and various parts and a handful of reed pens، inks، and parts of a stone vessel were also found in the box that is now preserved in the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir، as well as a group of parts of the papyri located in Turin.
Gebelein papyri represent documents containing details of local administration activities
The XXII Conference on Egyptology and Papyrology concluded that the two mountains or Gebelein papyri represent documents containing details of local administration activities، mathematical operations، lists of the names of workers working in building the temple and their jobs، and wages in kind in the form of lists of food items that were disbursed to them and subsistence، which highlighted the bureaucratic aspect of organizing work as it carries a realistic picture of life during the era of the ancient state through the activities of an Old Kingdom village، more specifically in relation to issues of labor and resource management and it dates to a developed administrative system in a very early period of ancient Egyptian history.
The XXII Conference on Egyptology and Papyrology added that The Italian Institute for Egyptian Civilization، a cultural association established in Turin in 1986 by eminent scholars from the main Italian universities، has the aim of promoting studies relating to ancient Egyptian civilization، from the Pharaonic era to the Greek، Roman and Byzantine ones، of being a meeting point for those who intend to develop knowledge of ancient Egypt: Egyptologists، papyrologists، philologists، historians of Antiquity and the History of Christianity.
