Huawei holds a forum on information technology's sustainable development

More than 100 ICT experts from around the world from 50 countries participated in the forum

Huawei Technologies, a world leader in information and communications technology solutions, held “Connecting for Shared Prosperity” forum on the sidelines of the largest annual global event in China, MWC Shanghai Mobile World Congress, in cooperation with Global Mobile Association (GSMA), Center of Environmental Economics of Fudan University, and The Paper.

The forum aims to shed light on the role of digital technologies in promoting sustainable development and build a better and connected world, in addition to exchanging different experiences on how to use digital technology to help implement common societal goals. More than 100 ICT experts around the world from 50 countries participated in the online forum.

In this context, Chen Lifang, Huawei Senior Vice President and Board Member, stated during her opening speech under the title "Reliance on Technical Capabilities”: Technology is a crucial element in life and it plays an important role in advancing development, while supporting the SDG goals to build an inclusive, innovative and environmentally friendly world. She urged individuals and companies to work hands in hands towards achieving two important goals: "Reaching a real agreement on the role of technology in advancing human progress and the need to take actions to enhance technology efficiency in addition to creating value for all."

She also added: “Huawei has contributed to promoting technical development, stemming from our confidence that technology will benefit all segments of the society. This is because we believe in the role of digital technologies in achieving the SDGs, in which Huawei has conducted many researches on the uses of digital technologies that can contribute to achieving the sustainable development goals.

On the environment level, Huawei's Smart PV solution is being widely used in more than 60 countries to reduce carbon emissions by 148 million tons equivalent of planting more than 200 million trees. In China, we have also helped build the world's largest solar stations dedicated to agriculture and fishing in Ningxia and Shandong provinces

A number of ICT experts from around the world in addition to government officials, attended the forum, as it provides opportunities to discuss joint cooperation between the public and private sectors in implementing and developing innovative technologies provided by Huawei to accelerate the digital transformation. Khaled Sherif, the Digital Transformation Advisor to the Minister of Tourism and Mohamed Abdel Fattah, Media Director of the Ministry of Manpower, praised the efforts of Huawei to implement the latest technologies to contribute in developing different sectors and industries in the Egyptian society. In addition to accelerating the digital transformation strategy in line with Egypt's vision 2030 vision for sustainable development.

During the forum, Eng. Walid Gad - Chairman of Chamber of Information Technology and telecommunication said: “Connecting for Shared Prosperity” forum organized by Huawei is a huge step for experts that highlights the important role of technology in achieving the SDG goals. Throughout history, we have witnessed many great social changes accomplished by scientific and technical achievements; and now we rely on information and communication technology to achieve sustainable development and preserve natural resources for the future generations.

He also added: For example, the innovative use of information technology provides alternatives travel means and cargo transportation, in addition to introducing a major shift towards less resource-intensive production, consumption, trade and services. These changes can greatly reduce the environmental impact of industrial and commercial activities, thus contributing to achieving sustainable development.

Dr. Hazem Tahawy Chairman of EiTESAL, extended his gratitude and appreciation to Huawei for providing such interactive partnerships with global and international experiences to keep up with the latest developments in information and communication technology around the world. He also highlighted the important role technology plays in achieving the SDGs, especially as the world is on the verge of the fifth generation.

Mr. Tahawy also emphasized that the world is currently witnessing the use of the fifth generation in various sectors. Since this technology is distinguished by its high bandwidth, low latency and the availability of wide communication range where it is increasingly relied upon in seaports, mines and the transportation sector due to its important role in enhancing operational efficiency thus reducing the energies used.

While Dr. Khaled WALI, Arab league ICT director highlighted the fact that without technology, we would not have been able to conduct any especially in light of the exceptional circumstances the world is currently witnessing. So every little improvement we have made, could not have been achieved without technical development. This is the value that technology brings to the world.

"Huawei is considered a strategic and influential partner in the digital transformation process that Egypt is witnessing in the current period and is supporting Egypt Vision 2030 by providing the latest technologies, he added.

Engineer Mohamed Nabil, ICT director – IDSC, explained that Information technology is a key element in accelerating progress implemented in each of the 17 SDGs. For example, it can help reduce poverty and hunger, strengthen health, create new jobs, reduce the effects of climate change, improve energy efficiency, and make cities and societies sustainable.

He also extended his gratitude to Huawei for its keenness to transfer knowledge between technology experts around the world, while showcasing the best practices to create new developed societies that provide the opportunity for technological development and reduce the risks of poverty, hunger and carbon emissions.

It is worth mentioning that China hosted the first session of this conference in Shanghai last year, attracting 200,000 visitors and 71,000 guests from more than 40 countries and regions. Shanghai will also establish 6 demonstration areas for the creative application of AI technology and 60 application scenarios for AI technology by 2020.
