Air Liquide Egypt and United Energy Group sign MoU to develop Green Ammonia project

Air Liquide Egypt and United Energy Group (UEG) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop robust and sustainable projects in the energy transition field in Egypt. This partnership aims to assess and develop projects, particularly in the production of low carbon ammonia based on renewable hydrogen.

Thanks to its strong renewable resources and favorable ecosystem, Egypt is uniquely positioned to become a leader in the renewable energy sector. UEG is actively developing renewable projects across the world, with a particular focus on Egypt. The group is engaged in building strong ecosystems with market leaders across the value chain.

Air Liquide, leveraging its strong presence in Egypt and technological know-how in the energy transition, will support UEG in developing renewable-based ammonia production notably by supplying nitrogen to the project and co-developing solutions to mitigate the challenges related to the intermittency inherent to renewable power, to produce competitive ammonia. Air Liquide has been operating in Egypt since 2002 and is already serving a large portfolio of customers in various markets: metals, glass, petrochemical, food and beverage, etc. This agreement enables leveraging on its strong experience in developing technologies for low-carbon production.

GU Xiaodong, Vice President and Head of Hydrogen of UEG said: “This cooperation with Air Liquide is a major step forward for UEG in our pursuit of green hydrogen projects in Egypt. By combining our local resources and Air Liquide’s leading capabilities and infrastructures in Egypt, we are well - positioned to develop green ammonia production facilities in the region. We look forward to working closely with Air Liquide to turn our vision into reality and fulfill our commitment to Egypt's green hydrogen ambition.”
