Barbie، one of the summer’s most highly anticipated movies and an instant blockbuster starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling، has grossed about $459 million domestically and $572 million internationally، with a total of $1.031 billion since its premiere on July 21، and grossed more than $155 million in the U.S. box office over its opening weekend، including a massive $70.5 million opening day، making it the biggest opening weekend of the year and the biggest ever opening weekend for a female-directed movie.

Barbie earned $29 million and nearly $34.6 million on its second Friday and last Saturday

Barbie، which was distributed by Warner Bros. co.، that is owned by CNN’s parent company Warner Bros. Discovery، went on to earn another $29 million on its second Friday and nearly $34.6 million last Saturday، multiple news outlets reported، citing figures from Warner Bros. Discovery.

Forbes Magazine mentions that Barbie global success was driven by box office sales in some of the world’s largest movie markets، including the United Kingdom، Mexico and Australia and the movie has been the No. 1 release in these markets every weekend since its release، according to tracking site Box Office Mojo.

Barbie the second-biggest release so far this year

Barbie movie، the second-biggest release so far this year just over two weeks after its highly anticipated premiere، also performed well in China، the second-largest market in the world and one that has becoming increasingly insular over the past few years.

According to experts، Barbie success in china is similar to franchise films like Transformers، Fast and Furious، and Marvel’s superhero movies tend to perform well with Chinese audiences.

Barbie، the global famous Mattel doll

Michael Berry، director of UCLA’s Center for Chinese Studies and who researches Chinese cinema and pop culture،stated that Barbie، the global famous Mattel doll is still iconic around the world، giving the movie a solid springboard for international acclaim.

Children in hundreds of countries have grown up with the dolls like Barbie، the global famous Mattel doll، and the film exploits that name-recognition in a very savvy way by playing into both the Barbie lovers and Barbie haters.

Barbie film attracts children and adult audiences

The Barbie film is also able to deftly walk a tightrope that appeals to both naïve and wide-eyed eight-year-old dreamers، who approach the film on one level، and adult audiences، who are able to interpret the film on an entirely different level، full of irony، humor، sexual innuendos، and allegory.

Topline Director Greta Gerwig’s smash-hit Barbie crossed $1 billion in worldwide revenue on Sunday، and added $53 million domestically from Friday to Sunday of this week، leading the box office for the third weekend in a row.

Barbie has surpassed many great films

The hot-pink Warner Bros. Pictures movie confirmed that Barbie is now the second biggest release of the year، only behind Nintendo’s، the Super Mario Bros. Movie، which has grossed a whopping $1.35 billion worldwide since its release in April، including more than $574 million in the U.S.

In its first two weeks، Barbie has surpassed Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3، which has made $845 million worldwide، including $359 million domestically، as well as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($476 million worldwide، $214.5 million domestically)، Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ($683 million worldwide، $379 million domestically)، Disney’s The Little Mermaid ($564 million worldwide، $297 million domestically) and Mission: Impossible، Dead Reckoning Part One ($451 million worldwide، $142 million domestically.

Greta Gerwig is the first solo female director to helm a billion-dollar film

Topline Director Greta Gerwig is the first solo female director to helm a billion-dollar film for the newly minted Warner Bros. Discovery، which merged in 2022، and only the second movie released in 2023 to do so and final numbers will be released Monday while only around 50 other films have reached this benchmark.

Gerwig first solo female director of Barbie joins Anna Boden، co-director of Disney’s Captain Marvel، as the only two women to helm a billion-dollar film but Captain Marvel reached just shy of $1.13 billion during its theatrical run in 2019 before the covid19.
